The Whole Earth Catalog is/was a fantastic, pre-internet collection of the Best of the World. The idea behind it was to collect together a whole bunch of disparate information that people looking to break out of traditional society in the 60s and early 70s could use to learn how to. The Catalog, its founder Stephen Brand, and the related Whole Earth Truck Store became counterculture touchstones in that era. Its mission was simple: "Access to Tools."

I have a copy of the Essential Whole Earth Catalog, released in the 80s. It's a fantastic relic of the time and place; chock full of books and tools that are still amazingly useful today.

WE ARE AS GODS and might as well get good at it. So far remotely done power and glory -- as via government, big business, formal education, church -- has succeeded to the point where gross defects obscure actual gains. In response to this dilemma and to these gains, a realm of intimate, personal power is developing -- the power of individuals to conduct their own education, find their own inspiration, shape their own environment, and share the adventure with whoever is interested. Tools that aid this process are sought and promoted by the WHOLE EARTH CATALOG.
