What Americans are currently worried about is terrorism on a large scale. 9/11 was the perfect example of this: a flashy attack on a high-profile target. This sort of terror is orders of magnitude easier to detect and stop than the nightmare scenario: small, random attacks.
Israelis have experienced this form of terror for decades, in the form of cafe and bus bombings. Small targets. No symbolism involved. Just random death.
To put this into perspective, let's perform a little thought experiment. What if ten Starbucks across the country were bombed? There was no rhyme or reason to the attacks; no one even claimed responsibility. There was just the realization that the attacks would continue.
People would still visit Starbucks, of course. But they'd be wary. Perhaps they'd go less often. Maybe Starbucks would try and redesign the stores to be more protected from bombs. And if the bombers expanded their targets? A Barnes and Noble one week; Wal-Mart the next. A private residence every once in a while, just for variety.
Think about it.
