A number of theories have been proposed to try and combine General Relativity with Quantum Theory, or, more exactly, explain how all four fundamental forces and the fundamental particles come into existence and interact.

String theory
"Strings", moving against a static space-time, move in such a way as to minimize their surface area. Currently rather vogue in the physics community.
Quantum Loop Gravity
Doubly Special Relativity
Others
Some physicists believe that Quantum Theory itself may be incorrect, that the speed of light may not be constant. Others believe that physics is missing something very important about the nature of space and/or time itself, since most models currently treat these as backgrounds that everything plays out against, even though General Relativity states that space and time are relative to the observer.
