History

iichan was started in July 2004 by a guy named Thock. It was an alternative to the only other english chan board at the time, 4chan. By the end of the year, it had all ended in tears, and wakachan had risen in its place.

The reasons for iichan's first death are the same reasons that do in many smaller sites: lack of money. However, iichan's demise was hastened by the owner of HentaiPalm, a man by the name of TheRowan. He reported iichan to paypal as violating the ToS there. Paypal froze and confiscated the sum total of the donations that had come in through Paypal at the time, a whopping $512, without which Thock could ill-afford to continue paying for hosting. TheRowan turned in iichan because he had launched a competing imageboard site, 5chan, and wanted iichan to die so that his traffic would go up. Yeah, real dick move. 5chan died a short time later as well, so the point was moot anyway.

So, anyway. Wakachan was designed to avoid some of the problems that plagued iichan, most of them financial. It was a "distributed" system, with a large number of disconnected servers, mostly cheap shared hosting, sharing the load of a full chan site. And, with remarkably little downtime since then, it's worked. The iichan domain was resurrected sometime in 2005, and Blackmage took over hosting duties for it.
