Custom Windows Card Decks

Since I think I know what I mean.

Ever grown bored with those bland cards that come standard with Windows card games? Spice up your solitaire with custom decks! Also works with Hearts and Freecell.

Here's the steps:

  1. Download one of the above .dll files to your desktop.
  2. Rename cards.dll in your windows/system32 directory (usually C:\WINDOWS\system32\) to cards.dll.bak. This is important! A new copy of cards.dll will appear.
  3. Rename the file you downloaded to cards.dll and copy it into C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache\ (you will likely have to type that directly into the address bar to find the directory, it's hidden by default).
  4. Windows will complain to you about this. Press Cancel, then OK.
  5. Replace cards.dll in C:\WINDOWS\system32\ with your downloaded file.
  6. Start any built-in card game and admire the changes.
    • You may need to deactivate archiving and the windows index service for this to work.

To undo this, copy cards.dll.bak to your desktop, then follow the above instructions with it as the downloaded file.

From 68HC11: "Another way to make it work is copy sol.exe from \windows\system32 and place it in a new folder along with the DLL you want. It just so happens that programs check for necessary DLLs in their immediate directory FIRST before they go for the SYSTEM32 version. Just another way to go about it if you don't feel like mucking with protected system files or want to retain the original Solitare." Thanks!

I'm not responsible for any damage that comes from the installation, use, downloading, or contemplation of these files. They were created using Resource Hacker, a powerful tool to extract and change embedded components of dll and exe files. Deck images are copyright their original artists; the Azumanga set was not created by me.
